Dreams and aspirations in life drive and shape us into what we one day desire to become. Throughout my life doctors have had a significant impact on my family, causing me to catch an interest in this profession that helps people get better and live a better quality of life. This exposure made me dream and aspire to become one day a doctor, especially a pediatric surgeon. I started looking for an opportunity that will grant me the exposure I needed to work toward my goal and that is how I meet Dr. Soares. Therefore, this semester I decided to explore my career interest and conduct a shadowing in Pediatric Surgery with physician Dr. Astrid Soares-Medina at Mayagüez Medical Center. I am enthusiastic to acquire knowledge through such an inspiring woman in the surgical medical field. Throughout this shadowing, I hope I gain an understanding of how doctors work to create and make an impact on other people’s lives and take my dreams one step forward. Eleonor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dream”. With this said, I consider this shadowing experience will give me direction and help me reach my professional goal of becoming a physician myself one day.
